As is the history and practice of medicine, massage has a long-standing history. While there is evidence that massage was utilized as early as the time of recorded history, the exact origin is not established. While historians believe that massage was born out of an Indian spiritual practice called Yoga, there is no evidence to support this. History is very vague in this regard, other than the fact that Yoga was popular in India and that its practitioners spread their practices across the globe.

The origins of massage therapy actually go back 3000 years prior to the oldest written texts of India. That would put it at approximately 3000 BCE or at the very least. In China, it is believed that the earliest mention of Chinese massage is the legend of the Yellow Emperor, who allegedly had the body of a fifteen-year-old girl healed by the use of the peach flower. Another legend suggests that the Yellow Emperor might have received this treatment by eating a peach flower on the lap of Jade Buddha. Another version has the story of a Chinese herbalist who healed blindness in a man making a paste from the leaves and the roots of one flower, called the "Nan Hu" that he procured from a well located in the royal gardens of the Nanking area. The fact that the "Nan Hu" paste helped the blind man is suggestive of the healing properties of the Chinese tradition of massage, even though the use of herbs as well as other treatments is not certain.

Marco Polo, an Italian doctor who introduced the "Swedish massage" to the Chinese court sometime between the sixth and 13th centuries. According to this legend, Marco Polo and his translator brought back to China the manuscript written in the Gothic language that was written centuries earlier by an Indian doctor, referring to a Swedish massage technique which was exclusive to India. The two doctors merged this information with information from other sources and created the massage technique known as "Yoga," meaning "the method." According to the legend, the two Asian doctors merged yoga with Swedish massage techniques, resulting in what we call the Swedish massage.
